Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department prioritises road and pedestrian safety

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is committed to ensuring the safety of all road users, particularly during October Transport Month. This year’s campaign places a crucial emphasis on pedestrian safety, focusing on identified areas of concern where road fatalities among pedestrians have reached alarming levels.
As part of our intensified enforcement efforts throughout this month, the JMPD, together with other law enforcement agencies such as the National Traffic Police and Gauteng Traffic Police, will conduct a series of operations aimed at educating drivers and pedestrians alike about the critical importance of road safety.
Data from previous years indicates that pedestrians constitute the highest number of road fatalities in our city. This tragic reality underscores the urgent need for collective action to create safer environments for everyone sharing our roads.

JMPD stated, “We will increase visibility through enhanced patrolling, traffic law enforcement, and public awareness campaigns. Officers will be stationed at critical junctions and pedestrian crossings to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and provide assistance to vulnerable road users. We urge drivers to remain vigilant, reduce speed, and be mindful of pedestrians- especially in areas marked as high-risk zones. Likewise, pedestrians are encouraged to use designated crossings, remain alert, and avoid distractions when navigating streets. Together, we can foster a culture of respect and safety on our roads.”
As it embarks on this month-long initiative, the JMPD asks for co-operation from the community, local businesses, and civil society organisations to champion road safety.

Let us all play our part in reducing the number of road fatalities in our beloved city. Each life is valuable- no one should ever have to deal with the loss of a loved one due to preventable accidents.
