Police bust R3m counterfeit goods operation

Provincial police spokesperson, Col Robert Netshiunda said investigators uncovered hundreds of counterfeit items within the shop’s storage facilities.

The counterfeiting industry is estimated to cost South Africa’s economy more than R3, 6 billion yearly. In an effort to combat this, Sydenham SAPS recently arrested a 25- year-old man in Overport in connection with the possession and sale of fake high-end cellphones and clothing items valued at over R3 million.

The bust occurred following a police intelligence operation that led them to a shop at the corner of Brickfield Road and Crescent Street.

“Police also uncovered that the shop was just a front for the suspect’s illicit cellphone trade. Hundreds of high-end clothing labels and cellphones were found at the storage facilities of the shop and were duly seized. Although the suspect claims that he gets his supply from Gauteng province, investigations are underway into the suspicion that the goods were illegally shipped into the country,” said Col Netshiunda.
