Hillgrove Primary School hosts coding competition

Hillgrove Primary School in Newlands West recently hosted the ‘Unplugged Mandela Day’ coding competition, bringing together over 12 schools and 170 pupils from the Newlands area. Spearheaded by Mr AS Khan, principal at Hillgrove Primary School, this event marked a significant milestone for the Newlands zone in a vibrant celebration of coding and robotics.
The competition featured the engaging games, Rangers and Tanks, powered by Tangible Africa. The 67-minute event was aptly timed to commemorate Mandela Month. Participants were encouraged to embrace teamwork and creativity, essential skills in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.

“We are preparing them for a future where technology plays a crucial role in every aspect of life. The coding competition not only celebrated Nelson Mandela’s legacy but also underscored the importance of equipping young minds with the skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. As technology continues to advance, initiatives like these ensure that our pupils are not just consumers of technology but also innovators and leaders of tomorrow,” said the principal.
The winners of the competition were announced with great excitement: Briardale Primary took the first and second positions, while Dr Macken Mistry Primary secured the third position.
The event concluded with a resounding sense of achievement and inspiration, as pupils were left with newfound knowledge and enthusiasm for the possibilities that lie ahead in the world of coding and robotics.
