Youngsters take on climate change in Mind Blown League

The game encourages players to engage in real-world activities such as tree planting, recycling, and litter clean-ups.

Last week at the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre, the 2023 Mind Blown League (MBL) season got underway in Chatsworth, bringing an exciting and educational twist to eSports.

Twenty schools are participating in this groundbreaking league designed to teach grades six to 12 pupils about climate change through the power of play.

This award-winning esports league offers a unique blend of virtual and real-world experiences to engage students in the battle against environmental challenges.

The game is available in both a physical card game version for schools without internet access and a mobile game on the Google Play Store. Selected teachers and pupils received free training, gaming equipment, and practical skills to become ambassadors for environmental change back at their school clubs.

The game encourages players to engage in real-world activities such as tree planting, recycling, and litter clean-ups.

They also learn mind-blowing facts in science, and it is also incredibly enjoyable. MBL is a strategic game proudly made in South Africa, blending elements of Pokemon and thunee.

This is a four-year pilot project by former Chatsworth residents, Viroshen and Nireshnee Chetty, who have received social innovation awards from the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and the SAB Foundation.
