Local lad selected to play football in Italy

To raise money, Kumaran and Vigie Pillay, Darius’s grandparents, sold delectable dinners.

An exciting football tournament was held at Daxina Primary in Lenasia to generate money for Darius Maharaj, who was selected to play football in Italy. According to Kalyani Naidoo from the provincial Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, being part of this event was a true honour and privilege.

Youth from Lenasia South showed up in numbers, all eager and ready to demonstrate their football prowess. Family and friends offered Darius a tremendous amount of support, some of whom travelled great distances to do so.

Seniors also demonstrated their football prowess on the pitch, which inspired the youth even more. To raise money, Kumaran and Vigie Pillay, Darius’s grandparents, sold delectable dinners. Despite not residing in Lenasia, the Maharaj family was eager to host this event in Lenasia South to raise the morale of the youth.

“Through this event, I was able to connect with young people, as well as those adults, who want to help our children develop into better young people by teaching them how to be more disciplined in their daily life and athletics,” said Naidoo.

Darius said that hard work, discipline, and respect pay off. Together with Naidoo, the community now wants to introduce more football, netball, volleyball, and native activities, as well as some arts and culture. The school principal was thanked for granting access to the grounds.
