“Time is like a sword, if you do not cut through it, it will cut through you.”
In Surah Asr, the Almighty takes an oath on time – time that is running out. An example is juice that is being extracted from a fruit, until the fruit has no juice left. This is how quickly our time is running out. The Almighty says, “Surely the human being is in a state of loss. The Almighty is warning each and every one of us that we are in a state of loss. This is because of our sins. A beautiful example would be that of a slope. The ease of committing sins is like the ease of sliding down a slope. The easy actions of committing sins makes us forget where our sins are leading us, not really realising that our sins are only leading us to hell.
We do not realise where our destination is.
When we realise that this mistake is leading us to hell, this realisation is imaan (faith). In order for us to stay away from hell we need to change our direction. We have to start by climbing up the slope. Climbing up the slope is not easy. Climbing up the slope is doing righteous deeds. That is why Almighty says “Except those who believe and do righteous deeds.”
It does not end, there but while we are trying our very best to climb up the slope, that is striving towards Jannah, something is pulling us back down. This is when we fulfil our desires and waste our time in amusement and fun. The Almighty then says, “And preach truthfulness and preach to be steadfast.” We cannot aim to reach our goal alone, but we need to lead others towards truthfulness. This means that we need to encourage others to be steadfast in our deen (religion).
We need to start now as our time is running out. Time is more precious than rubies and gold. We should not lose it in amusement and fun, as after this life, (which we do not know when it will end) our time would run out. If we do not use our time properly, it would be of no value. This implies that we should use our time adequately.
May the Almighty, through the medium of our beloved prophet (peace be upon him) give us the ability to value our time and use our time wisely in the Ibaadat (worship) of Almighty and preaching the deen to others.
