Pennington Conservancy participates in International Coastal Clean-up
These were the interesting stats for the day: Pennington Beach (Beach Café), 13 collectors, 92 kg of litter, Ski Boat Club, 15 collectors, 20.3 kg of litter, and 1 live rat, so 28 volunteer collectors brought in 112 kg of bad stuff, in over 40 bags.
The Pennington Conservancy would like to thank everyone who participated in the International Coastal Clean-Up Day on Saturday, September 17.
We had two collection points at the Pennington Ski Boat Club and Pennington Beach.
These were the interesting stats for the day: Pennington Beach (Beach Café), 13 collectors, 92 kg of litter, Ski Boat Club, 15 collectors, 20.3 kg of litter, and 1 live rat, so 28 volunteer collectors brought in 112 kg of bad stuff, in over 40 bags.
The weight was mainly due to a number of glass bottles extracted from the dunes and bushes near the deck.
Other items were plastic bottles, polystyrene trays and cups, plastic, wood, and smaller bits, including cigarette stompies.
General comments were that the actual beach sand was pleasantly clean.
A few littering hotspots were discovered in the dunes – too difficult for elimination on the day – these will be tackled going forward.
Lisa was collecting litter and picked up a box to place in a plastic bag when she heard scratching sounds.
On investigation, she found a cute little rat.
She decided that the Pennington Conservancy probably wouldn’t like to find him by surprise in their recycling on Wednesday.
The rat was safely returned to his home in the dune vegetation. Thanks, Lisa.
