Somewhere in my past I remember someone telling me that she had read a book in which it was stated that coincidences did not exist! Well, whether this was a genuine case of coincidence or not, the message made for interesting reading.
Last week I was cycling up the Umzinto road and after crossing the bridge over the N2, I had to wait for three timber trucks which were entering the glide on to the N2.
My thoughts dwelt upon the voracious need modern living has for paper. This very newspaper contains pages and pages and seen in totality I wondered how many logs would be used up in supplying paper the weekly issues of the Rising Sun.
Then consider ALL the newspapers across the country and the quantity of trees needed to keep the newspaper industry going is incomprehensible. Arriving home, my smartphone alerted me to a few incoming WhatsApp messages. One of which I found to be a strange coincidence since it dealt with the problem of deforestation and climate change.
The timber trucks had me thinking about deforestation and, lo and behold, here was a message that dealt with that very subject! Coincidence?

In this video clip, a man called Allan Savoury states that a massive tsunami, a perfect storm, is bearing down upon us here on Earth.
This perfect storm, he says, can be attributed to the ever-growing world population rising to 10 billion, land that is turning to desert and climate change.
One of the major problems facing the world is the provisioning of fossil fuels and this can only be solved by technology. Desertification is a fancy word for the process whereby land is changed into desert.
When this happens, famine causes migration and other related problems.
The result of years of research in all parts of the world, the scientists have reached astonishing conclusions in that they have thrown out the concept that overgrazing causes desertification.
They have experimented in different parts of the world that have become deserts because (as initially thought) overgrazing was the cause, by reintroducing livestock in large numbers.
The results are astonishing and for those who are interested, you can look up the You Tube videos of Allan Savoury – farmers, especially should be interested in this new approach. A day later I received another WhatsApp video from a friend far removed from the person who sent me the Allan Savoury message. This video also dealt with climate change and deforestation. Another coincidence?
In this video, it is mentioned that climate change is a “sprawling, complex problem” but there is an astonishingly simple way to make a difference and this is to plant more trees.
A NASA veteran, Dr. Lauren Fletcher, has taken up the challenge and he created BioCarbon Engineering and, by working with colleagues, he developed a drone with a mass of less than 14 kilograms that can fly over the most rugged landscapes in the world, planting trees in precise locations at the rate of 120 trees per minute!
The USA military have drone pilots operating from within the USA who are able to direct drones to fire at terrorists in places like Afghanistan and Syria with uncanny accuracy, getting drones to plant trees by firing seed pods into the ground with equal accuracy, seems to be the answer to enabling technology to make a difference to climate change.
