Chatsworth couple allegedly duped by fraudster

Fraud accused set for trial.

A woman, who was charged with fraud in November 2011 and was released on bail, is now facing trial at a Midrand Court in Johannesburg.

Rajah Rajaspery, 60, had been defrauding people from Chatsworth for years, offering services like bonds, car finance, and personal loans, after which she would then take a deposit and defraud her victims. Her bank statements clearly reflected that though she was charged for fraud, there were transactions of money received into her account from different individuals.

Neeraj and Leona Singh, a couple who fell into the trap of the fraudster, said, “She is a woman with no conscience and empty promises. I have letters from her lawyers, whom I don’t think exist, promising payment which never materialised. The fact that she had still been receiving large amounts of money into her account after opening the cases against her, it clearly shows that she was still defrauding innocent people. She cannot explain how an unemployed woman has that many receipts in her bank account. We have also been in contact with her family members who had informed us that she has done this previously. A year prior to us meeting her, she had defrauded a person for R 70,000 whereby her family had to settle to avoid criminal charges.”

Warrant Officer Goodwill Ramagweja, who is the investigating officer in the case, said, “The woman had been fraudulently receiving money from members of the Chatsworth community and I am appealing to anyone who may have more information on her or who have been robbed by this woman to contact me. The matter is currently in court and is due for trial. I have completed my investigation and subpoenaed all witnesses. I have nine people to take the witness stand already. We look forward to justice being served.”

Numerous other cases have come forward, all victims of the same fraudster as well. Anyone who may have fell victim to Rajaspery should contact W/O Ramagweja on 011-347-1600 or 073-309-9191 or Neeraj or Leona Singh, who are spearheading the case against Rajaspery on 083-244-1537.
