What is your New Year’s resolution?

South Africans have been hit by a plague called corruption and greed. Many seem to be driven to become councillors or members of parliament by the need for money and fame.

We are almost into the New Year- 2020. It is a time that we reflect on our lives in 2019 and decide on changing undesirable behaviours or habits. The New Year is a time for us to adopt achievable goals that will bring significant positive changes in our lives.

We also hope that people in government will similarly identify their weaknesses and adopt measures that will once again make our country a peaceful and prosperous one.

South Africans have been hit by a plague called corruption and greed. Many seem to be driven to become councillors or members of parliament by the need for money and fame.

They then appoint unqualified and incompetent lackeys to key positions. This strategy is to ensure that these appointees will carry out their master’s instructions. This includes awarding of tenders for kickbacks, stealing of government funds, channelling of funds for personal gain, etc.

When someone blows the whistle on corruption, an investigative team is appointed. The rogues are identified but nothing further happens. We have yet to see corrupt government officials in South Africa being imprisoned.

Amidst the chaos of corruption, it is important for us ordinary citizens to take care of our well-being.

Therefore, we need to formulate goals that will improve our lives and bring a degree of fulfilment. The following are some resolutions you may consider adopting for 2020:

  • Draw up short- term and long-term personal goals. Then consider strategies to achieve these goals together with time frames as your guide.
  • Increase your debt payment so that you are debt free sooner.
  • Start a compulsory savings plan. A guide is to save at least 15 percent of your income per month and learn to manage your expenses on the balance.
  • Exercise more.
  • Eat healthy foods.
  • Give up drugs and cigarettes.
  • Moderate your intake of alcohol.
  • Improve your education and training so that you climb up the career ladder.
  • Get involved in community activities and volunteer your time.
  • Speak out against corruption wherever it exists and exercise your vote rationally rather than emotionally.
  • Develop a hobby that will bring you satisfaction.
  • Spend quality time with family and friends.
  • Stay focused on spiritually.
  • Pray more.
