Police officer accused of baton assault
The Moorton resident, who chose to use an alias, due to fear of being victimised by police, said that he will leave no stone unturned until justice prevails.
A 22-year-old Moorton man was allegedly beaten by a police officer on Bangalory Place in Arena Park, on Saturday morning.
“My life will never be the same again after I was brutally assaulted by the police officer who caused severe injuries to my face and mouth.”
These were the chilling words of Jericho Naidoo*, who claims a police officer, whose identity is known to the Rising Sun, allegedly assaulted him with a police baton, leaving him not only traumatised, but with permanent damage to his mouth.
Naidoo, who chose to use an alias, due to fear of being victimised by police, said that he will leave no stone unturned until justice prevails.
He explained what happened on the day of the incident. “I dropped off my elderly grandmother at my aunt’s house on Bangalory Place at about 8:40am and as I drove off, three cars stopped at the end of the road and blocked the road. I tried to drive passed the vehicles but was stopped by a police officer, who was not attired in uniform. He hit me with the baton through the window while I was still seated in the driver’s seat of the car. He appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. His friends then pulled him away from me. I opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at the Chatsworth SAPS,” said the traumatised young man.
Naidoo lost two of his teeth and suffered an injury to his jaw during the attack. Meanwhile, a police officer from the Bayview SAPS, who resides in the same area where the incident occurred, said that his son was also assaulted by the same officer, earlier that morning.
“Charges of brandishing and pointing a firearm, discharging a firearm in a public place and attempted murder were opened against the officer at the Chatsworth SAPS. People living in the area are afraid of the accused because him and his father are officers of the law and he gets away with a lot of crimes,” claimed the police officer.
Provincial police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane, confirmed that only a case of pointing of firearm and discharging of a firearm were opened at the Chatsworth SAPS. “No arrests have been made at this stage and the matter is still under investigation,” added Lt Col Zwane.
