Tackling crime in the community
The mobile camera room will be used by the POLSEC team to monitor streets of Chatsworth and surrounding areas to ensure a festive season with minimum crime.
After several successful years of running, POLSEC, the partnership between the eThekwini Inner South Cluster, together with local security companies from the Chatsworth area, have included a revolutionary mobile camera room to improve the policing in the eThekwini Inner South area.
The mobile camera room will be used by the POLSEC team to monitor streets of Chatsworth and surrounding areas to ensure a festive season with minimum crime. The room is equipped with nine cameras, including two cameras which will be able to view 450 metres into Chatsworth and monitor the area.
Created in 2009 by the eThekwini Inner South Cluster commander, Maj Gen Nunkumar, POLSEC is a one of a kind project which is exclusive to the eThekwini Inner South region and is the only project which has a dynamic team of police officers and security companies working hand in hand to combat crime in the area.
The security companies involved in POLSEC include Ananzi Protection, M Protection, Crimes Prevention, Compaq Security, Ubuntu VIP Protection, MVTR Tracking, KNY Consulting, JDC VIP Protection, Crime Stop Investigations, VIMBA Security and Amawele VIP and Body Guarding.
POLSEC falls under the eThekwini Inner South Cluster, and spends their policing time monitoring the streets of Chatsworth, conducting local drug busts, clamping down on the house breaking in the area, as well as making schools a safer environment by conducting regular searches at the schools in the community, searching for drugs and dangerous weapons.
Due to POLSEC monitoring the areas, arrests have not only increased, but the visibility and operations conducted by different role players were received positively by the community from different areas in the cluster.
The chairman of POLSEC, Vis Munien, said that since the inception of POLSEC, it has been noticed that due to the transparency between security officers and police officers, they were able to share vital ‘crime reducing’ information and working together, resulting in a positive outcome being achieved.
“Due to the motivation of the brainchild of POLSEC, Maj Gen Nunkumar and the POLSEC team, we found this partnership between the eThekwini Inner South Cluster and members of POLSEC to be a great success and it allows the community to benefit from having a safer environment. Being passionate about combating crime, I believe we need to take back the streets of Chatsworth,” he said.
Founder of POLSEC, Maj Gen Nunkumar, thanked the security companies who take time away from their businesses to form this partnership and devote their time to fight crime within the Chatsworth and surrounding areas, resulting in the community reaping the full benefit of a safer environment.
“The partnership between the members of POLSEC is a firm bond, cemented to make a difference and reduce crime within the eThekwini Inner South area,” he concluded.
