Public urged to stay vigilant during Sardine Run season
Beachgoers are advised to avoid swimming in unprotected areas, adhere all warning signs, and comply with instructions by lifeguards, emergency services, and beach management.
As the annual Sardine Run begins along the coastline, members of the public are urged to prioritise safety when visiting beaches and coastal areas.
Residents and visitors are reminded that shark nets have been removed in certain areas, increasing the potential risks associated with entering the water during this period.
According to Dawn Gounden of Renegades Search and Rescue, the Sardine Run attracts marine life, including sharks and other predators, closer to the shoreline.

“In previous years, numerous drowning incidents have been documented along the coastline during this season. Tragically, some victims were never recovered despite extensive search efforts,” she said.

“The Sardine Run is a remarkable phenomenon that attracts thousands of spectators annually. However, public safety must remain the highest priority.We urge everyone to remain vigilant, make responsible decisions, and take all necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience along our coastline,” Gounden concluded.
