Metro Police clamp down on illegal activity in Newlands West following community tip-off

Swift action by the Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS) on Tuesday, May 5, has led to the identification of undocumented individuals and the shutdown of an illegal business operation in Newlands West.

The operation followed a complaint from residents highlighting concerns over suspected illegal activities in the area. Acting on the tip-off, Metro Police, in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs, launched a joint intelligence-driven operation targeting identified hotspots.

Durban Metro Police spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu, said the operation focused on compliance inspections and broader law enforcement interventions. “During the operation, several undocumented persons were identified and processed in accordance with the law,” said Col Zungu.

In addition to immigration-related enforcement, authorities uncovered a business premises selling prohibited skin-lightening face cream, in violation of the Medicines and Related Substances Act.

“The necessary enforcement action was taken, and the matter will be pursued in line with applicable legislation,” Col Zungu confirmed.

Further by-law enforcement measures were implemented to address non-compliance and other illegal activities within the community. Col Zungu emphasised that the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to respond to residents’ concerns and improve safety in the area.

“This operation forms part of our ongoing commitment to respond to community concerns, improve safety, and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. We appreciate the public for reporting issues and encourage continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies,” he added.
