eThekwini Municipality and SDCEA join forces for Grunter Gully clean-up
According to the municipality, the programme is part of an ongoing series of coastal clean-ups aimed at keeping beaches and waterways free of pollution while protecting the natural beauty of Durban’s coastline.
Environmental groups, fishermen and municipal officials recently joined hands to restore one of the Bluff’s important coastal areas during a clean-up operation at Grunter Gully.
The initiative formed part of activities marking World Wetlands Day, with the eThekwini Municipality’s Waste Management Directorate partnering with the KZN Subsistence Fisherfolk and the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) to remove litter and promote environmental awareness.

SDCEA said the clean-up, held with the support of Durban Solid Waste (DSW), brought together fisherfolk and community representatives who share a commitment to safeguarding the local fishing zone.
Participants collected plastics and other waste from the area, helping to prevent harmful materials from entering the ocean and threatening marine life.
SDCEA emphasised that protecting the coastline is a collective responsibility and that community-driven initiatives play a key role in preserving the environment. Organisers also highlighted that such efforts contribute to sustaining the livelihoods of fishing communities that depend on healthy marine ecosystems.
