Saluting the spiritual legacy of His Holiness, Sri Swami Sahajananda on the occasion of his 100th birthday (July 10, 1925 to July 10, 2025)

The swami’s legacy and footprints included schools, clinics, children’s homes, low-cost housing, peace centres, and skills development projects that uplifted countless underprivileged communities.

On this sacred day, July 10, 2025, the Sivananda World Peace Foundation and devotees across the globe, respectfully commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth and divine legacy of His Holiness, Sri Swami Sahajananda, spiritual head of the Divine Life Society of South Africa and devoted disciple of Sri Swami Sivananda, the revered sage of Rishikesh, India.

The swamiji’s contributions extended far beyond spiritual teaching, having been inspired by his guru’s ideal of ‘Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realise’, he spearheaded more than 300 humanitarian projects across South Africa – including across towns and rural areas in KwaZulu-Natal between 1974 and his Mahasamadhi in 2007.

Born on this day in 1925 in the town of Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal, Swamiji – formerly known as V Srinivasan – surrendered a promising academic and sporting career to heed the inner call of spiritual awakening. His search for truth led him to the teachings of Sri Swami Sivananda through the book Practice of Karma Yoga, which ignited in him a lifelong devotion to spiritual service, meditation, and self-realisation.

In 1949, under the guidance of the Master, Swamiji established the first South African branch of the Divine Life Society. In 1956, on his second visit to Rishikesh, he was formally initiated into the holy order of Sannyas, taking on the monastic name Swami Sahajananda. From that moment, his life became one of unwavering obedience, humility, and service to humanity.

Swami’s rich legacy will forever go on.

A tireless Karma Yogi, Swamiji personally edited, typeset, printed, and bound thousands of spiritual books, ensuring the teachings of his Master reached generations of seekers. He cultivated a spiritual movement rooted in Seva (selfless service), Satsang, Japa, and Meditation, inspiring thousands to walk the path of righteousness.

As a saint who saw divinity in all forms and beings, Swami Sahajananda’s life stands as a testament to true spiritual greatness. He exemplified humility, discipline, and compassion, integrating deep devotion with practical service to humanity.

On this momentous centenary, we reflect on Swamiji’s extraordinary life – one of total surrender, selflessness, and sacred action. A scholar who relinquished worldly ambition, a teacher who led through action, and a spiritual torchbearer who became the Chota Guru of South Africa, Swamiji’s life continues to illuminate the path for seekers and servers alike.

The enduring legacy of his mission – rooted in Swami Sivananda’s philosophy – continues to guide our collective efforts in building a just, compassionate, and spiritually awakened society. On behalf of the Sivananda World Peace Foundation, we humbly bow in reverence and eternal gratitude to His Holiness Sri Swami Sahajananda for his unparalleled service to the people of South Africa and the world. May his divine legacy inspire generations to come. Om Tat Sat,” said Prince Ishwar Ramlutchman Mabheka Zulu, one of the swami’s leading disciples and devotees, and currently heading the Sivananda World Peace Foundation as its president.
