Multi-vehicle K43 accident claims three lives

According to Superintendent Xolani Fihla, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), preliminary information indicates that the white Hyundai Accent was travelling south on K43 Road. The other three vehicles were headed north on K43, following each other.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 27, a tragic multi-vehicle accident occurred on K43 Road, opposite Lenmed Hospital, near the intersection with Capella Street in Lenasia.

The collision involved four vehicles: a white Hyundai Accent driven by a male with four male passengers, a red Mazda Drifter driven by a male with no passengers, a white Kia Rio driven by a female with no passengers, and a maroon Renault Clio driven by a female with one female passenger.

The driver of the Hyundai Accent reportedly attempted to overtake the vehicle ahead. During this manoeuvre, the Hyundai Accent side-swiped the right rear of the Mazda Drifter. Subsequently, the Hyundai Accent collided head-on with the Kia Rio. As a result of this impact, the Renault Clio collided with the Kia Rio, pushing the Kia off the road.

Tragically, the driver and one of the four passengers in the Hyundai Accent sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The other three passengers in the Hyundai Accent suffered serious injuries. They were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Mazda Drifter was uninjured, while the driver of the Kia Rio suffered serious injuries and was taken to Lenmed Hospital, where she was sadly declared dead upon arrival. The driver of the Renault Clio sustained minor injuries and was also taken to Lenmed Hospital for medical attention; her passenger was unharmed.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Lenasia SAPS for further investigation.
