Man sentenced to 15 years for robbing schoolgirl at knifepoint

A Durban magistrate sentenced 24-year-old Trent Jordan Prince to 15 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of stealing a schoolgirl’s cellphone from her bag.

The robbery incident occurred last year when a 17-year-old pupil was on her way to school, walking with her schoolmates along Duranta Road. While walking, the accused grabbed her school bag from her shoulder, and a tussle ensued.
The man pulled out a knife, pointed it at her, and the girl, fearing for her life, let go of the bag. The accused took the cellphone and dropped the bag before fleeing.
The case was assigned to Det Sgt Siyabonga Mhlongo, who charged the accused after his arrest by Metro Street Crime Watch on August 8, 2024. Witness statements were obtained, and the matter was brought before the Durban Regional Court.

The detective opposed bail, and the accused remained in custody until the trial. On April 4, 2025, Prince was convicted of robbery with aggravated circumstances, declared unfit to possess a firearm, and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
