Lenmed eThekwini Hospital and Heart Centre unveils first private trauma ICU in KZN

This new ICU will be crucial in managing a wide range of traumatic injuries, providing essential monitoring and interventions for patients who need intensive, round-the-clock care.

The Lenmed eThekwini Hospital and Heart Centre is proud to announce the opening of its state-of-the-art trauma intensive care unit (ICU), the first of its kind in a private healthcare facility in KwaZulu-Natal. This pioneering unit is a significant step forward in the hospital’s trauma accreditation strategy and is poised to provide life-saving care to patients suffering from severe trauma.

The newly opened trauma ICU features eight beds, with an advanced isolation cubicle specifically designed to handle burn cases, providing specialised care in a controlled environment. The unit is equipped with cutting-edge technology and staffed by a team of highly trained ICU nurses, each with extensive experience in trauma and critical care. 

“We are committed to delivering world-class healthcare to our community, and this trauma ICU allows us to offer the highest level of care to patients in their most critical moments.  Whether it’s a motor vehicle accident, a fall, or a gunshot wound, our team is equipped to respond rapidly and expertly to stabilise and treat patients in life-threatening situations,” said Niresh Bechan, the hospital CEO.

eThekwini Hospital and Heart Centre is one of Lenmed’s centres of excellence and an ultra-sophisticated and digitally integrated hospital north of Durban boasting an extensive and leading adult and paediatric cardiac and cardiothoracic service offering. It is the only hospital in KwaZulu-Natal that offers much-needed services for paediatric cardiac surgery.

The facility is the first in Africa to be awarded accreditation by the American College of Cardiology, and has been awarded an international centre of excellence award from the college. The hospital has also received numerous of the World Stroke Organisation’s top awards.
