Coding victory for Merebank pupils

Nine schools from the Durban South region participated in the tournament, which was hosted by Alipore Primary, at Merebank Secondary School.

As coding and robotics are rolled out in schools all over the country, forming part of the Department of Education’s efforts to maintain the relevancy of primary and secondary education in an increasingly technological world, schools are adopting the concepts as early as possible to stay ahead of the curve.

Tangible Africa hosted the annual Mandela Day coding tournament in over 70 sites across South Africa, with the aim being to introduce pupils to coding concepts through the use of physical tokens and smartphones, to prove that coding can be taught even without computers.

Nine schools from the Durban South region participated in the tournament, which was hosted by Alipore Primary, at Merebank Secondary School.

Each school had four teams, and each group had to complete 30 levels, with the first five groups completing the levels and then participating against each other in another unseen level. Merebank Secondary emerged victorious, with their exceptionally determined team.

The school has expressed tremendous pride in their pupils, who sacrificed many a lunch break, with their teacher, Ms A Naidoo, to train for the tournament. The winning team will represent Merebank Secondary at a provincial level next month.
