Verulam police apprehend two drug runners
They were both detained at the Verulam SAPS and appeared in the Verulam Magistrates Court on Monday facing charges of possession of heroin and rock cocaine.
Two men were placed under arrest for drug possession on Sunday morning, after the Verulam SAPS crime prevention unit received information of narcotics being sold along the alleyway of a bar premises related to the ‘Thatu Gang’, on Wicks Street in the Verulam CBD.
Verulam SAPS spokesperson, Cnst Bongiwe Ngcobo, said, “Police officers then proceeded to the said alleyway. When the drug runners noticed police officers, they fled into a bar to evade arrest. Police officers gave chase and apprehended two drug runners, resulting in the recovery of rock cocaine pieces, heroin capsules, and cash. The arrested men are aged 18 and 26.”

Verulam SAPS station commander, Brig Khethiwe Makhathini commended the work done by the crime prevention team led by W/O Muniapean.

Brig Makhathini said, “I do not regret making a shuffle and placing a new team to conduct crime prevention duties following the allegations that were made by the members of the community relating to the ‘Thatu Gang’ issue.
