Umdoni workers on strike

Both unions agreed on Tuesday, April 9, that the municipality is collapsing and requires intervention from leadership.

On Monday, April 15, workers at all Umdoni Municipal offices went on strike due to unresolved work-related grievances.

The workers, represented by the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU) and South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU), gathered outside the main Umdoni municipal building in Scottburgh. According to Skhumbuzo Ngwane, the KZN regional chairperson of IMATU, management failed to address their grievances.

A meeting was held at the Umzinto Town Hall, however, the municipal manager did not show up- the workers were told that she was sick.

There was no follow-up or a new date set for another meeting, which led to frustration and escalation of the situation.

Both unions agreed on Tuesday, April 9, that the municipality is collapsing and requires intervention from leadership.

The members demanded to be addressed by the troika of the municipality and that they would only resume work once their grievances had been addressed.

At the time of going to print, union members were engaged in a meeting with various stakeholders in Durban to further address the issue.
