Help foster a love for reading by becoming a volunteer at Progress Primary

Each child’s reading journey is different.

Progress Primary School’s volunteer reading group is looking for volunteers, who will provide reading support to grade one and two pupils twice a week.

The aim is for the volunteer to reinforce the alphabet and phonic sounds with the pupils and read stories to them. A training session will be held for the volunteers before reading sessions begin.

The reading sessions began at Progress Primary School in 2019, however, COVID-19 severely affected the project for years. It is now being pursued vigorously as the gift of reading is a stepping stone for pupils to progress.

A volunteer said, “We receive unconditional support from the school principal and teachers, which inspires me. So, every time I fetch a pupil from their classroom, I use it as an opportunity to have a word with each child, and I always ensure that the conversation is cheerful. It helps to set the tone for the session ahead.”

Each child’s reading journey is different.

“For some struggling readers, once their self-esteem is restored, their reading flourishes. For others, I establish their reading level, then convince them that they can read better, and they do! I’ve discovered a whole new world of reading, and my life has been enriched through interaction with other volunteers and school personnel, and, of course, the incredible pupils, whom I have worked with,” the volunteer added.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can contact Ajit Gandabhai on 073-492-3920 or Madam Benazir Malim on 071-351-4751.
