Fostering a love for reading at the Lotus School of Excellence

The new library opening coincided with World Read Aloud Day, which takes place annually on February 7.

Dr Ismail Vadi, former MEC for Roads and Transport, officially opened a new library at the Lotus School of Excellence in Extension 10, Lenasia, last week.

Speaking at the event, Vadi stressed the significance of reading from a young age, stating that readers become leaders and that a leader who does not read has a ‘dull personality’.

At the school assembly, he highlighted the example of former deputy chief justice, Dikgang Moseneke, who studied in prison during apartheid and became a well-known lawyer.

“Even as the apartheid government imprisoned his body, it could not imprison his mind,” said Vadi. The library initiative was created by Mr Robert Abrahams, a senior English teacher, and his team of junior librarians- all pupils at the school.

The new library opening coincided with World Read Aloud Day, which takes place annually on February 7.

World Read Aloud Day highlights the value of reading and sharing tales by encouraging participants to grab a book, find an audience, and read aloud. This global initiative, spearheaded by the non-profit, LitWorld, is observed in over 173 countries this month.

Vadi congratulated the school on the opening of its new library, noting that when ‘Our Reading Tree’ donated books to the school last year, the library was working out of a temporary steel container.
