Bayview man gunned down in alleged drive-by shooting
Being just the latest in Bayview’s drive-by shooting scourge, provincial police had to be contacted to gain a comment, with spokesperson, Col Robert Netshiunda, providing more insight into the case.
Bayview came to a standstill, on Sunday, after a brazen shooting in broad daylight claimed the life of one of their own.
At around midday, social media groups blew up with messages of the shooting, with reporters arriving at the scene on Lenny Naidu Drive to find hundreds of residents gathered behind police tape, which stretched from one end of the busy roadway to the other, marking the start of Havenside Drive.

Within the scene, a bullet-riddled VW Amarock with a silver foil covering the driver’s seat where the equally riddled body of the victim, Omanathan Subramoney, lay.
The roadway showed the yellow spray paint, which marked out dozens of bullet casings. Known as Terrence or Spoons to members of the community, the victim was affiliated with the football team, Summerfield Dynamos, and was also the brother of MP Brandon Pillay, who was visibly distraught at the scene.
Another one of Pillay’s brothers, Seelan Pillay, was also gunned down in a bustling shopping centre in October of last year. PT Alarms Chatsworth ambassador, Kegan Naidoo, was one of the first responders at the scene.
“I received information of a shooting, which was in progress at the corner of Lenny Naidu Drive and Havenside Drive. Upon arrival, one man had been found seated in his vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. The PT alarms medical teams had arrived at the scene and attended to the male but unfortunately, he was declared dead due to his extensive wounds. Bayview SAPS stood down and took over the scene, which seemed to have been a drive-by shooting. Multiple high-calibre bullet casings were found at the crime scene.The motive for the shooting is unknown. At this stage, police officers are investigating further,” said Naidoo.

“Police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating a case of murder following an incident in which a man was shot and killed in an apparent drive-by shooting in Bayview, on Sunday afternoon. Information at the police’s disposal at this stage is that the victim was at braai with friends and left them, saying that he needed to see someone urgently. A few minutes later, the man’s vehicle was found across the pavement at the corner of Road 101 and Road 201, riddled with bullet holes. The victim, who is an alleged drug dealer, was found in the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene. The motive of the shooting and the suspects remain unknown at this stage,” said Col Netshiunda.
