Sewage crisis continues unabated in Tongaat
The Rising Sun contacted Cllr Geoff Puran, who blamed the municipality for their lack of service to the community.
Residents in the coastal belt town of Tongaat have raised their concerns after little to nothing has been done to remedy and address the growing raw sewage crisis.
Tongaat Civic Association spokesperson, Don Perumal, in a video via social media, recorded the sewage spewing out of a manhole in the CBD.
He said, “The sewage here has been overflowing for a couple of days and nobody bothers. I’ve seen other areas as well as in Tongaat which clearly shows a collapse of the system in the area. All the municipality is doing when they come out is to pressure hose the filth and unblock the sewer which is a reprieve from the underlying issues.”

In yet another social media uproar, there are now growing calls for the beach facility at Westbrook to be closed to protect the health of the lifeguards and beach users. Pictures from the once pristine beach used by bathers reveal how sewage is now flowing out from the manholes into the parking area and onto the beach.
Seatides resident, Basil Naidoo, said, “Well, what more is there to say than this is a catastrophe beyond measure? I cannot fathom how the municipality doesn’t see the issue here and why it isn’t taken seriously. Besides the health of residents being left at their peril, can you imagine the effect this will have on the ocean?”
