Multi-million rand cultural centre to built in Chatsworth

The Tamil Advancement Society has a building project- a cultural centre- at the corner of Road 740 and 725 in Montford. This project has been beset with numerous difficulties over the years.
The elders, who undertook this project, got it up to a window level. Almost all these members have sadly passed on.

“We are a new committee, who have taken on this mammoth project. Over the past ten years or so, we have had running battles with the eThekwini Council to get our plans passed. They have repeatedly placed obstacles in our path, and lost the plans a couple of times, resulting in us having to submit again. It has been a long and frustrating process. We finally received our ‘passed plans’ in July last year. We have commenced with the building of the ablution facilities. Due to a lack of funding, we have stopped. It is in this regard that we direct our appeal to you. We are asking all our families, friends and associates to make contributions to the society. It can be an amount of R500 or R1, 000 per family, or whatever amount is affordable. We are also asking residents to contribute R100 per month directly into our bank account. We have several fundraising projects in the pipeline that will be held in the coming months. However, our immediate target is to complete the toilet project and in doing so, the eThekwini Council will grant us a 12-month extension of the building plan. The huge township of Chatsworth does not have a cultural centre, specifically for the promotion and propagation of the Tamil language and our rich cultural heritage. As an organisation, we regularly host functions to meet this mandate, yet for us to operate as an entity, our cultural centre is an absolute necessity. We currently use the Seven Hills Primary School and pay rent of R800 per month, funded by members. We need to have a base,” said executive members of the Tamil Advancement Society.
Members hope and pray that residents will come forward to assist them and they thank you in anticipation of a favourable response.
