A South coaster from his birth in Port Shepstone on November 25, 1933, his lively personality as well as dynamic speed on the wing made the sobriquet Dashing Dan especially relevant to Danny le Roux, who passed away in Pennington recently.
He was arguably one of South Africa’s most valued soccer players of his time, having played right wing for Berea in 1950, Queens Park between 1951 and 1956 and then appeared in 5 league matches for world-renowned English first division team Arsenal during the 1957-58 season.
He returned to SA to play for Durban City from 1959 to 1961 and then represented Durban United from 1962 to1965. More importantly, he represented his country South Africa no less than After retiring from playing, Danny went on to coach Addington, Durban City and Maritzburg City clubs.
He became a partner with other soccer icons Reg Wright and Les Salton in Les Salton Sports Dealers at 325 Pine Street, Durban. Danny retired to Pennington in 1983 and took up his most enjoyed activity of “fishing” and spending time with his family. Described by his wife of 59 years Margaret and his daughter Caron Keightly as “ a champion husband, father, sportsman and human being”, he also leaves behind sons Stephen and Grant, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons.
