Sibaya holds the winning hand for successful SunBet Poker Tour
To participate in the SunBet Poker Tour, players must be over 18 and have a Sun International MVG card which can be activated on the day of the event. The tour’s next destination after Sun City is Boardwalk in Nelson Mandela Bay, and the final leg is planned for GrandWest in Cape Town towards the end of the year.
The glitz and glamour of the SunBet Poker Tour returned to Durban’s Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom earlier this month, where over R9 million was won throughout the 10-day tournament.
The Sun International tournament lived up to its billing as Africa’s Richest Poker Tour, and Sibaya did not disappoint, offering players, as well as spectators a thrilling gaming experience.
“The event was truly exhilarating, I am not sure if the spectators or the players had a better time! We are pleased with how the event came together, it was world-class,” said SunBet CEO, Simon Gregory.
The ‘6 Max’ tournament was won by Ahmed Karrim, ‘Big Shot’ by Ray Adam, ‘High Roller’ by Jesse Rosen, ‘Little Slam’ by joint winners, Sugen Singh and Kinesh Pather, the ‘Main Event’ by Kinesh Pather, Mega Million by Johannesburger, Lagen Zackey and ‘Semi Freeze’ by Durbanite, Tanith Rothman.
The Sibaya event was the last chance on the SunBet Poker Tour for players to win points for the Race to Vegas, which sees the top 10 players on the leaderboard win an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas to take part in the World Series of Poker in June and July.

Team South Africa, ranked in order of points, is Ahmed Karrim, Alvin Pillay, Darren Kramer, Kinesh Pather, Jesse Rosen, Rudolf Fourie, Max Deveson, Stephen Courtney, Fazel Dawood, and Edgar Antezana.

“It is every poker player’s dream to play in the World Series of Poker. We wish them all the luck! These players have won the trip of a lifetime to Las Vegas, the ultimate poker destination,” said Gregory. The package includes flights, accommodation, team merchandise, dinners and entertainment. The top three winners receive a main event entry into the World Series of Poker worth $10, 000 each.
The Poker Tour is in its second year with SunBet as the main sponsor, which makes stops at key Sun International properties around South Africa. In 2022, the tour saw more than R66 million paid out in prizes and organisers expect the 2023 five-leg edition to be even bigger and more lucrative.
Marc Joseph, the director of Monster Jam Poker Tour, said, “After another thrilling stop of Africa’s Richest Poker Tour, we can’t wait to keep growing the sport of poker, and to see everyone at Sun City for our next event from August 4 to 13.”
