Aunty Dhana celebrates 100th birthday amid much love

In her younger years, she worked hard planting vegetables and tending to her garden, and together with her mother and sister, sold them at the market.

Born in 1923, Rookmoney Govender celebrated her 100th birthday in Woodhaven, recently. She is the sixth of ten children and lived with her family on Teakwood Road, in Clairwood.

She later moved in with her brother in Chatsworth, and thereafter to Yellowwood Park. She currently lives with her sister-in-law.

In her younger years, she worked hard planting vegetables and tending to her garden, and together with her mother and sister, sold them at the market.

According to her niece, Krishni Govender, who she resides with, Aunty Dhana, as she is fondly known, enjoys her time cooking and baking.

“She had two life-threatening experiences in 2020 and 2022, but pulled through and recovered well. She is like a second mother in our house,” said her niece, who jokingly added that her long life was due to her being single and not having the stress of a husband and children.
