Community clean-up operations a huge success

Three DSW skips and several bakkie loads of rubbish were removed from various illegal dumping hotspots in the area.

Multiple clean-up operations were conducted over a three-day period in the Merebank community, recently. This was a fruitful partnership between the Merebank Civic Committee (MCC) and the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA).

Three DSW skips and several bakkie loads of rubbish were removed from various illegal dumping hotspots in the area.

The organisation has identified that a majority of the dirt that is being dumped illegally is by ‘wheelie bin guys’. In a bid to catch the culprits in the act, illegal dumping hotspots will be monitored and culprits will face the full arm of the law.

Scenes from the clean-up campaign.

“We cleaned up two neglected parks, namely Surada Place Park and Umarkot Crescent Park. Sadly, the Parks Department has failed us with their service delivery. We are warning the residents of Umarkot Crescent and Surada Place to refrain from littering and dumping of unwanted items. Make use of the facilities provided by DSW,” urged Paul Naidoo, MCC media officer.

The MCC thanked SDCEA for their sponsorship, Rajmahal Hotel, DMR Stainless Steel, Merebank Taxi Association and Engineering Industrial Supplies for their kind donations in cash and kind.

“This would not have been possible without the help of Raymond Rampersad and Victor Mkhize from DSW. We would like to thank Deena Naidoo from TNT Recycling Specialist. We also acknowledge the residents, who dug into their own pockets to clean-up. We would also like to thank every street champion, who ushered their teams and came out and sacrificed their time to clean up their road or corner. There MCC salutes you and your team,” Naidoo added.

The teams conducted the clean-ups at Dharwar Krishna Rabilal, Hubli Place, Poona Road, Clinic Taxi rank, Merebank High School, Merebank Shopping Centre, Junagarth Road, Bhuj Road, Surada Place, Umarkot Cresent, Sambalpur Road, Parbhani Road, Lakhimpur Road, Lower Ridge traffic circle, Warangal Road, Nizam Road, Amritsar Place and the Buldana Road sandy patch.

“We are also appealing to residents and whistle-blowers to report those people, who are still using ‘wheelie bin guys’. You may remain anonymous. When you call us to report illegal dumping, a law enforcement officer will be dispatched immediately. We are also appealing to all security companies to assist us in our search for wheelie bin guys and illegal dumpers. You can report to our team or to the law enforcement officer,” Naidoo said in closing.

Various areas were cleaned up.

Residents are urged to report all illegal dumping on 031 311-8804.
