Mum of four hopes to win Mrs Universe Africa pageant
Nothing short of amazing is how she described her journey thus far.
Former Wentworth resident, Candice Underhill, is over the moon after being announced as one of the top 20 finalists in the Mrs Universe Africa pageant.
Nothing short of amazing is how she described her journey thus far. “In the beginning, I did get a little anxious because I had to step out of my comfort zone. I had to do cold calling, send emails and visit potential sponsors. I had to learn how to sell myself as a brand and use the Mrs Universe Africa platform to shine my light,” she said.
As part of the Mrs Universe Africa pageant, contestants are required to raise funds and assist charities of their choice. The mother of four chose to donate to a children’s home because children are close to her heart.
“It was the most amazing feeling walking into the children’s home for the very first time with groceries from one of my sponsors. To see the children’s faces light up changed my perspective on giving back. I have learned that there are so many people out there, who do not have the luxury we have and that we should be grateful instead of always feeling like we need more. Just knowing that I made a difference in someone’s life has been a very fulfilling experience,” said Underhill.
She described herself as someone, who is shy and reserved and said that this pageant has helped her build her confidence and step out of her comfort zone.

“I’m now speaking in front of large crowds and approaching businesses for sponsorships. Many times I thought this isn’t for me and often asked myself what I am doing? But now I just exercise gratitude and give thanks for all the special and challenging moments I am experiencing,” she added.
Underhill burst into tears when she was informed that she was a top 20 finalist because she couldn’t believe that she had really made it to this point in the pageant.
“This entire journey has been a dream come true. Being on a platform with someone I respect and admire highly, our director, the former Miss SA Bokang Montjane-Tshabalala, has been an inspiring experience. She has this zest, this incredible energy inside of her and she makes us believe that anything is possible. Being selected has really been a defining moment in my life,” she said with excitement.
Underhill needs your vote to win the People’s Choice Award. The winner of this award will secure a spot into the top 10. To vote, SMS Queen ‘Candice Underhill’ to 33282. Voting will be open until Thursday, September 23.
