Female attorney breaks down barriers to ‘claim’ victory
Elated by this achievement, Shireen Soobrathi (46) shared that although she is in a male-dominated industry, she is never intimidated by another human being. She is confident of her abilities.
History was made by a Shallcross attorney and mother when she broke down barriers in what is often considered as a male-dominated industry, thus becoming the new chairperson of the Chatsworth Small Claims Court.
Elated by this achievement, Shireen Soobrathi (46) shared that although she is in a male-dominated industry, she is never intimidated by another human being. She is confident of her abilities.
“The legal fraternity was always male-dominated. It was difficult to break in as a woman 21 years ago. Hard work and perseverance have made me a household name in Chatsworth. It is a great accomplishment for women in the legal fraternity. I am so ecstatic. Attorney Noven Naidoo put my name in the hat. I was duly elected by a vote unanimously against the other candidates,” she explained.

Soobrathi thanked her mother for ensuring that she gets a good education regardless of the poor circumstances she grew up in.
“I was just a year old when my parents moved to Shallcross. I grew up in a poor home but both my parents worked extremely hard to educate my three brothers and I. All the credit of my success goes to my parents and God. I look up to my mum because she is a strong woman, who made her mark in the community of Shallcross,” she added.
The mother of two girls focuses on criminal matters such as murders, robbery, domestic violence issues, children’s court matters and divorces. Her office also deals with civil litigation and conveyancing matters.
