Learning continues through Merebank Secondary School website

Acting deputy principal, Mrs V Chetty, stated that a key feature of the website is a COVID-19 resource page that was designed with online resources to support learning at home.

Merebank Secondary School strongly believes that even during this global crisis of the coronavirus, it is important that learning continues.

The school has since launched their website, during level four of the national lockdown, to ensure that those pupils, who are not back at school yet, can continue with their studies.

Acting deputy principal, Mrs V Chetty, stated that a key feature of the website is a COVID-19 resource page that was designed with online resources to support learning at home.

“We have developed activities and lessons for pupils to extend learning into their homes during this lockdown period. Schools are closed for grade eight to 11 pupils but learning continues at Merebank Secondary. We have a collection of resources to support remote learning for grades eight to 11 at the click of the button,” explained Chetty.

Pupils can view videos, power point presentations and download documents that explain concepts clearly as per the CAPS curriculum.

“Parents and caregivers can help facilitate learning. Our website will assist parents to set up daily routines for learning at home and gives guidance on how to facilitate the continuation of learning,” she added.

Other secondary schools will also be given free access to the website in the hopes that this platform will support their learning and education as well.

Acting principal, Mr K Bridgelal, commented that by using this website, pupils will have be afforded the opportunity to continue with their lessons online while waiting for schools to open.

“I am encouraging all our pupils to have a structured programme using our website. However, parents need to monitor their children’s use of the internet. This website will also serve as an alternative communication channel between the schools and parents,” he said.

The school plans on updating their website as regularly as possible for the benefit of the users.

“We see this initiative as a model that is developing. Although we have the website as an online learning platform, we are aware of the limited connectivity and data access for some of our pupils. We will soon apply to have our website zero rated so that pupils can have free access to our websites,” added Chetty.
