Six arrested for allegedly hijacking e-hailing drivers in Umlazi

On March 11, 2020 at about 6:15pm, an e-hailing driver was driving his vehicle at AA Section in Umlazi to drop off three men, who were picked up on Field Street.

A group of six men, aged between 16 and 23, are expected to make their first court appearance soon, after they were apprehended for allegedly targeting and hijacking e-hailing drivers in the Umlazi area.

Provincial police spokeswoman, Col Thembeka Mbele, confirmed that the suspects were arrested at M Section.

“The suspects will be profiled to establish if they are linked to other carjacking cases reported in Umlazi and surrounding areas,” she stated.

On March 11, 2020 at about 6:15pm, an e-hailing driver was driving his vehicle at AA Section in Umlazi to drop off three men, who were picked up on Field Street.

“When he reached their destination in Umlazi AA Section, he was allegedly strangled by one of the suspects while the other pointed a firearm forcing him to lie down. They robbed him of his vehicle, cellphones and he was dropped off at P Section. A case of carjacking is being investigated by Bhekithemba SAPS,” added Col Mbele.

The Bhekithemba and Umlazi Trio Task acted on information with regards to the hijacked vehicle hidden at Z Section.

“They proceeded to the said place and the vehicle was recovered. The team worked the entire night searching for the suspects involved in the matter. The investigation led the team to M Section where the arrests were effected,” she continued.

They were found in possession of the complainant’s cellphone as well as the vehicle’s keys.

The initial investigation, conducted at the scene, revealed that the same group of suspects are positively linked to another hijacking case where an e-hailing driver was robbed of his vehicle by three armed suspects at AA Section on March 5, 2020.

KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Khombinkosi Jula, commended the team for the arrests. “The suspects will be profiled to check if they are linked to other carjacking cases,” he also stated.
