Deputy principal accused of cutting pupils hair on school premises

Parents of the pupils of the Crossmoor based school are now calling on the Department of Education to suspend the deputy principal with immediate effect.

A group of primary school pupils are refusing to return to school after their deputy principal allegedly cut the children’s hair at school, last week.

Parents of the pupils of the Crossmoor based school are now calling on the Department of Education to suspend the deputy principal with immediate effect. Charmaine Cele, mother of a grade 5, said she was shocked to hear about what happened to her son in school.

“My son was warned to cut his hair and I took him to the barber for a haircut. The week after my son had had a haircut, the deputy principal cut his hair with a pair of scissors during class time. I was furious and confused as to why he had to do this to my son. This is child abuse. Our children have rights and under no circumstances should they be victimised and intimidated to this extent. My son is now refusing to go to school as he fears the deputy principal. This is a very serious matter as our children’s rights are violated. The deputy principal needs to be suspended and a thorough investigation needs to be conducted,” said the irate parent.

Another parent, Loganathan Naidoo, expressed his views on the matter. “The conduct of the deputy principal is improper and needs to be addressed. Children are learning in an atmosphere of threats and intimidation. The department of education needs to take urgent action to rectify the situation so that stability in terms of teaching and learning is resumed. The only way this can be achieved is if the deputy principal is removed,” he said.

Head of communications at the Department of Education, Muzi Mahlambi, said, “We will check on this issue with the school in terms of their school policy regarding hair, however, there are other means to disciplining pupils, which does not entail the teacher himself cutting the hair of pupils.” The principal of the school could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print.
