Rotis and Stories: A heartwarming initiative to support elderly pensioners
The project kicks off this Saturday at 11am at the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre in Chatsworth, where volunteers will gather to make roti and learn about the importance of community service.
In a remarkable display of kindness and compassion, 12-year-old Vinoshan Naidoo has launched a roti-making project at the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre, aimed at supporting very poor pensioners in the community.
The project, aptly named ‘Rotis and Stories’, brings together volunteers to teach young people how to make roti, which will then be distributed to elderly pensioners in need.
Vinoshan shared, “But what’s truly special about this initiative is the emphasis on companionship and storytelling. As volunteers deliver the roti to the pensioners’ homes, they will take the time to talk to them, listen to their stories, and share in their experiences. Many pensioners in the community suffer from loneliness, and this project aims to bring some joy and companionship into their lives. Rotis and Stories is not just about providing food to those in need, it’s about building connections and relationships with our elderly community members. We want to listen to their stories, learn from their experiences, and show them that they are valued and cared for. As the project continues, volunteers will have the opportunity to visit the pensioners’ homes multiple times, checking in on their health, needs, and well-being. This ongoing support will help build trust and foster meaningful relationships between the volunteers and the pensioners.”
