Each year, Saiccor Mill pauses operations for a major maintenance shutdown—not to stop progress, but to accelerate it. This year’s effort was among the largest in the mill’s history, involving over 1,000 additional workers and important upgrades, including a new turbine and precision maintenance across key systems.

The shut was not only about enhancing performance and safety – it became a springboard for local economic activity.

Over R5.7 million was channelled into nearby small businesses, demonstrating Sappi’s commitment to empowering communities. Local contractors were at the heart of this effort.

Bukhosibamambo Investments brought in 52 contractors, including 21 skilled artisans and 8 women. Sahiba expanded its services to include high-pressure jetting and employed 131 people from surrounding communities. Ukhahlamba Contracting and Trading provided temporary employment for 76 workers and maintained high safety standards every step of the way.

“These kinds of activations are proof that supporting SMEs isn’t just a good business decision—it’s a way to change lives,” said Sappi Regional Procurement Manager Daniel Monyela.
Sappi continues to work hand-in-hand with the Integrated Local Community Forum (ILCF), ensuring structured community engagement and open dialogue on jobs, business opportunities, and development.
