This MoU is signed at a time when UKZN has set its sights on making sports one of the key focal areas for the institution. As part of this focus, the University aims to position itself as one of the top-achieving Universities in sports performance to complement UKZN’s already strong academic standing.
“As UKZN, we have taken a strategic decision to enhance our sporting profile over the next three years. We will do this by investing in infrastructure, investing in the development of our athletes and seeking meaningful and impactful partnerships. Thus, the signing of the MoU with Durban City augurs well for that vision of restoring UKZN Sports to its rightful place. We also believe that this partnership will benefit the entire football fraternity in the province. We are excited to collaborate with a professionally run football club such as Durban City and we are confident that this collaboration will yield mutual benefits and contribute to the growth of both brands,” said Normah Zondo, the executive director for corporate relations at UKZN.
For Durban City, the MoU comes at a time when the club is on top of the table in the Motsepe Foundation Championship and is in poll position to advance to the Betway Premiership next season.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Durban City chairman, Mr Farouk Kadodia, said, “This partnership is founded on a shared vision: to merge the passion of sport with the power of education. Together, we will unlock new possibilities for students, staff, and players – whether through research, player development, or community engagement. Our goal is to bridge the gap between academia and the dynamic world of professional football. For students, this collaboration opens doors to real-world experience in sports science, media, marketing, business management, and coaching – all within the high-energy environment of a professional club. For our players and staff, it means access to cutting-edge research, world-class facilities, and educational programs that will elevate performance on and off the pitch.”
Even before the MoU was signed, the two parties had collaborated in the area of fitness assessments with that collaboration already producing tangible results.
Under that collaboration, UKZN conducts comprehensive individual and team fitness assessments for Durban City players. These evaluations provide detailed fitness reports that support the club’s performance objectives and contribute to a data-driven approach to athlete development. Two UKZN students are already involved in the club where they provide expertise in strength and conditioning.
