Former DA councillor arrested for fraud of R1, 5 million
Ismail Cassimjee, a once revered councillor of ward 70 in Chatsworth, has had a history of negative allegations and claims made against him, resulting in his eventual sacking in 2017, by the hands of the Democratic Alliance, after allegedly taking R5, 000 from a community member, with a failure to repay the money.
A former disgraced DA councillor, who brought the party into disrepute, having his membership terminated after failing to repay borrowed money, has finally been arrested following allegations of numerous fraudulent activities, totalling to about R1, 5 million.
Ismail Cassimjee, a once revered councillor of ward 70 in Chatsworth, has had a history of negative allegations and claims made against him, resulting in his eventual sacking in 2017, by the hands of the Democratic Alliance, after allegedly taking R5, 000 from a community member, with a failure to repay the money.

The now 51- year-old was arrested at the start of the month by Chatsworth detectives.
Communications officer of Chatsworth SAPS, Cpt Cheryl Pillay, explained that Cassimjee had been sought by police all over KwaZulu-Natal, as he is involved in fraud cases in the policing precincts of Chatsworth, Greenwood Park and Brighton Beach.
“The investigating officer from Chatsworth investigated five cases of fraudulent activity, amounting to over R1, 5 million. Despite his arrest, investigators from Brighton Beach and Greenwood Park will continue with investigations, which link the fraudster to other cases. On Monday, February 7, the investigating officer successfully opposed bail at the Chatsworth Magistrates Court, citing that the accused was a flight risk,” Cpt Pillay said.
Last Friday, Chatsworth detectives arrested a second accused in Bellair. The 58-year-old suspect will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrates Court on Monday, with Cassimjee, who appears for a formal bail application.

The acting station commander, Col PM Moodley commended the investigating officer, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the accused was arrested and placed before the criminal justice system.
“We appeal to witnesses to follow through with cases, ensuring that criminal elements are removed from society,” said Col Moodley.
