Fun times as children commemorate World Play Day

The Little Montessorians School of Isipingo Beach participated in the programme, which focused on highlighting and celebrating the importance of play in the lives of young children.

The Isipingo Beach Library, together with District 6 Libraries, recently commemorated World Play Day with an exciting and fun-filled programme.

The Little Montessorians School of Isipingo Beach participated in the programme, which focused on highlighting and celebrating the importance of play in the lives of young children.

According to Isipingo Beach librarian, Sivi Govender, play involves exploration, language experimentation, cognition and the development of social skills and as such, is central to children’s learning and is also the foundation for adult achievement and creativity.

“The objectives of this programme are that with today’s life pressures, play is one of the most neglected privileges of a child and for this reason, there is a special day that is dedicated to play around the world,” said Govender.

She added that the aim is for children to let go of the stresses of daily life and just play.

“Playing in the mud, making daisy chains and climbing trees are simple pleasures that have defined childhood for many generations. But such youthful pursuits appear to be dying out as an increasing number of children play computer games instead and prefer technology but by connecting generations through play, we hope to reignite the love for outdoor activities,” she explained.

Guest speakers gave lively and interactive talks to the young kids before they started playing games.

The day was filled with lots of fun and activities such as indoor and outdoor games.

Ultimately, the day was a major success and was enjoyed by both the young and old.
